Common Auto Insurance Questions
Auto insurance helps drivers afford the costs that arise following wrecks, vehicle thefts or other hazards involving their cars. These might be the costs of vehicle repairs, medical bills from injuries or even the costs that you are legally required to pay others. Your auto policy can pay many of these costs on your behalf so that you won’t face a big financial blow just because of an accident you didn’t expect.
Iowa is an at-fault insurance state, meaning that when a wreck is deemed your fault, you not only have to pay for your own damage, but also the damage that you do to other people. Your car insurance is the instrument you can use to ensure that you meet these obligations. That’s why Iowa requires registered drivers (including you) to carry minimum amounts of auto insurance.
Drivers are required to carry auto insurance that contains at least the following liability coverage:
- $20,000 bodily injury/death liability coverage per person
- $40,000 bodily injury/death liability coverage per accident (two or more injured parties)
- $15,000 property damage liability coverage per accident
Liability insurance does not pay the insured driver for their own damage or injuries. Instead, if an accident is your fault, then other drivers, pedestrians or property owners can file against your liability coverage to receive compensation for their losses.
What many people don’t realize is that a liability-only auto policy won’t cover their own vehicle damage in case of accidents. Therefore, it might not be able to help you cover some of the costliest expenses that you might face in a wreck. We encourage all our clients to work with us to increase and adjust their auto coverage in ways that will help them achieve far-reaching, optimized protection.
Some of the coverage to always ask your agent to add to your plan includes:
- Higher Liability Limits
- Collision Insurance
- Comprehensive Physical Damage Insurance
- Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage
- Roadside Assistance Benefits
- Medical Payments/Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Plus, you can also augment your benefits with custom parts coverage, umbrella liability insurance, gap insurance, and replacement cost vehicle insurance. We can insure high-risk drivers, SR-22 recipients and all other drivers in ways that are most beneficial to them. And, we will make sure that your plan stays within your budget at all times.
